This
cover of American tennis player Mali Vai Washington, shot in the
New York city daylight photo-group
studio in 1995, “...we had groomer Peter Brown re-create
the look of a player just ‘off the court’ with sweat
droplets on his face. I decided to try using a navy towel to partially
cover Mal's face, with his eyes peering out at the viewer, being
the main focal point. The lightest part of a photo is where a
viewers eyes are naturally drawn to, and in this case I think
the utilization of black and white photography also helped create
a strong image." relates Landis.
Mal
Washington was and is a great athlete and human being, active
in giving back to the communtiy through his foundation. He is
also a courtside commentator at Grand Slam events for major television
networks.

For
this cover of Valentina for lingerie trade publication BFIA's December
1995 issue,Steve Landis and art director Greg Timpone
decided to create a winter effect in the studio, using the very
low tech approach of plastic snow thrown by hand, from a ladder
between the camera and the Italian model, Valentina
from Elite, New York. Mathew Williams created the hair style
and Alphonse did the make-up. Landis used a Nikon F3 with a 35mm
f1.4 wide angle Nikkor lens. He lit the photo for a wrap around
white effect, with assorted strobes and shot EPR-64 (E-6 processed
at L&I Color, NYC) film.
