By
the time we worked together on this job, Carol and Kelly were two
of the biggest cover girls in the business. They were
both terrific girls and had hundreds of covers each throughout their
careers, including many VOGUE, and other Conde Nast publications,
covers. This photo was among many photographs taken to be
used in a press kit for fashion designer, Don Sayres. Shot
with a Nikon and Kodak Tri-x film.
My
personal Carol Alt story follows: A couple of years
earlier Elite Models vice-president Monique Pillard had spotted
Carol waiting tables in a restaurant and told her to come in to
the agency. A few days later I met Carol and took her on location
for what was her first test shoot. We went to Connecticut,
to shoot outdoors.
I'd
been introduced by my friend Barry Secular, to George Martin,
who invited me to shoot at his house there if I liked. George,
soon thereafter opened a trendy restaurant in Manhattan named after
himself. One of George's tennis buddies, (they had a tennis
court at the house), was Marty Raines. Carol wound up dating
Marty for a long time and learning a lot about business and real
estate from him. Carol is a very intelligent woman.
She was very hesitant to even try modeling as a serious profession,
because of her academic ambitions. I told her that she should
try modeling. But she was quite skeptical about her chances.
On the train ride to Connecticut, I was almost pleading with
her, to forget waitressing, devote some time and effort to modeling,
and to postpone college. I had nothing to gain from this.
I just knew as I'd known earlier upon meeting Andie
MacDowell the first time, that she was well above average.
After a period of seeing hundreds if not thousands of new models,
as I had in my first couple of years in New York, the top girls
stand out. So here Carol Alt had an opportunity that millions
of people only dream about, but would she grab hold of it and make
a future for herself? I try to always be conservative
when giving advice on such matters and told her at the minimum she
could make a living as a fashion model, and who knows?
Carol
was obviously a natural beauty, but didn't seem concerned about
the particulars of make-up and girly things. She needed to
polish herself, ever so little, for the business, and she did.
She worked very hard to get herself into top shape, eventually becoming
a Sports Illustrated Swimwear Issue cover girl, adding to her visability
among the general public. Carol was one of the top cover girls
and supermodels of the eighties and is also an actress.
